Ministry of Sound London (commonly referred to as just Ministry of Sound), is a nightclub, based in London, United Kingdom and an associated record label.

Ministry was ranked sixth in the 2009 DJ Magazine top 100 clubs poll 2009. As well as the nightclub in London, there is another in Egypt. The Ministry of Sound brand also includes various other products such as dance music compilations and clothing. Ministry of Sound is owned by MSHK Group Limited, which has offices in London, Sydney, Berlin and New York.

The Chairman of MSHK Group is James Palumbo who is also the majority shareholder; a small minority share-holding having been sold to private equity house 3i in 2001. The Chief Executive Officer of MSHK Group is Lohan Presencer. MSHK Group has global sales of £80 million and employs up to 500 personnel worldwide. Its mission statement is: “to create the moments that people live for”. The company also owns the Hed Kandi, Euphoria, and Hard2Beat brands.

Inspired by New York’s Paradise Garage, Ministry of Sound’s London nightclub was the brainchild of DJ Justin Berkmann, who set out to create London’s first club devoted to the US house music scenes of New York, Chicago and Detroit, with a room purely dedicated to sound. He stated: “My concept for Ministry was purely this: 100% sound system first, lights second, design third (in that order); the reverse of everyone else’s idea.”

Berkmann partnered with James Palumbo and Humphrey Waterhouse to bring the concept to life and a site, a disused bus garage, was located in Elephant & Castle in Southwark, London. The club opened on 21 September 1991.

With opening sets from US house DJs like Larry Levan, David Morales, C+C Music Factory, Roger Sanchez and Tony Humphries, the UK’s first 24-hour dance license, and a 140dB(A) sound-system designed and installed by Austen Derek, Ministry of Sound London quickly grew in popularity as a clubbing venue, despite the lack of an alcohol license for the first three years and notoriously strict door policies.

Today, the club remains at the forefront of the global dance music scene, with internationally recognised DJs playing mix sets every Friday and Saturday night. Since April 2008, Fridays have been hosted by The Gallery, with sets from leading hard house and trance DJs. Saturdays are Ministry of Sound’s long-standing Saturday Sessions with house, electro and techno sets from popular DJs including Sasha, Erick Morillo, Pete Tong and David Guetta. Ministry of Sound London also hosts a range of other parties and events during the week and is available for private hire.

The club comprises five main areas; the Bar, the Baby Box, the VIP and the Loft and the Box, the latter housing the club’s primary sound-system, with a specially-built roof to contain sound and a sprung floor intended to enable clubbers to dance for many hours without tiring, inspired by the dancefloor at the Paradise Garage.

Ministry of Sound has announced an event in UK at Thu, Dec 31, 2009 at New Year Eve O2 Arena London, United Kingdom

Envisioned by the Fisher Brothers as “the most beautiful building in the world,” the Fisher Building in Detroit was designed by Albert Kahn in the early 1920s. The seven brothers were sons of Lawrence Fisher, Sr., a Ohio carriage maker. Coming to Detroit, the brothers founded Fisher Body Company, which eventually was bought out by General Motors. Their aim was to create a building in Detroit that would express the Fishers’ appreciation of their new hometown.

When completed, the Fisher Building interior included a variety of marble from places such as France, Germany, Italy, and Greece. A barrel vaulted ceiling was decorated with cherubs and eagles. Along the building’s arcade, visitors are met with chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and in panels along the walls. Between 500 to 600 of the chandelier’s lights are replaced at a time. Visitors to the Fisher were greeted by men in white who would park their cars; free babysitting for shoppers, complete with a carousel and nurses; and a lavish lunch in the famed Huyler’s L’Aiglon tea room.

In the Fisher Theater, guests admired the Aztec theme and Mexican-Indian art, as well as banana trees, and wandering macaws that audience members fed by hand. In the lobby, goldfish and turtles made their home in a pond. Here, performances by the house orchestra, organ recitals, stage shows, and movies entertained guests. Following the Depression, the theater mainly operated as a movie house.

In 1961, the theater was remodeled as a live theater under the management of the Nederlander Theatrical Corporation. The original 3,500 seats were scaled down to 2,089 to create a more intimate atmosphere for guests. The Nederlander family began their theater legacy with David Nederlander, son of a Detroit cigar maker. David managed the Detroit Opera House, where the likes of Barrymore, Eddie Cantor, and Al Jolson made appearances. He later operated the Shubert and Cass theaters, which featured Jack Benny, Gloria Swanson, and Better Davis.

In 1961, David and his sons turned their attention to the Fisher Theater, hosting many shows that were on their way to Broadway and building the country’s largest subscription audience. Today, the Nederlander family owns theaters across the USA and in London, England.

Today, the Fisher Theater, Broadway in Detroit, features some of theater’s most popular traveling Broadway productions. For instance, in January 2008, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Whistle Down the Wind” came direct from London. Proclaimed by critics to be “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best show since ‘Phantom of the Opera,’” the production is an uplifting musical about a young Louisiana girl and her siblings as they approach the first Christmas since the death of their mother. They find a mysterious stranger and, convinced he is Jesus, agree to hide him from the townspeople, who are determined to find him. Based on a 1961 film of the same name, the production made its Fisher debut in January, 2008.

In February 2008, audiences thrilled to the feel-good production of “Mamma Mia!” Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, audiences enjoy the funny tale by writer Catherine Johnson, of family and friendship as it unfolds on a Greek island. Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, who composed the music for ABBA, were involved in the development of the show from its inception. With more productions playing internationally than any other musical, “Mamma Mia!” is a global smash hit and has won numerous Tony Awards.

When Carole King and James Taylor shared the stage of the Troubadour club in 1970 little did they know that this will be the performance to shoot them both to stardom. The next year King released her album Tapestry which is one of the best-selling albums ever, winning her four Grammy Awards that year and making her the first woman to win so many Grammys in a single year.

After forty years King and Taylor will get together again for their Troubadour Reunion tour. The tour will start with a show in Melbourne on March 27 and will continue with a series of shows in New Zealand and Japan. In May they will return for the US leg of the tour which will end in July.

The US leg of the Troubadour Reunion tour will include stops at Seattle’s Key Arena, San Jose’s HP Pavilion, LA’s Hollywood bowl, the Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix, the Sommet Center in Nashville, Chicago’s Allstate Arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as well as other venues in Columbus, Atlanta, Tampa, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and others.

King and Taylor will tour together with their old friends and band-mates guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

Both King and Taylor have been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, they are both Grammy Awards winners and are among the most successful musicians ever.

More than 1000 artists have recorded Carole King’s songs. From her 25 solo albums more than 100 hit singles have emerged. Her most successful album, Tapestry, is regarded as a classic not only for its original songs but also for popular covers such as Aretha Franklin’s version of “Natural Woman”. Most recently singer Christine Tobin and pianist Liam Noble expressed their desire to create an album based on Tapestry but looking at the songs from a jazz perspective. The project is called Tapestry Rewoven and is expected to be completely different from the original.
With the filming of blockbusters such as 8 Mile, The Island, and Transformers in local Detroit locations, filmmakers are discovering Detroit is a city rich with extraordinary film location possibilities. From an island park located in the heart of the city to gritty warehouses to a vibrant cultural and entertainment district, Detroit has everything that filmmakers are seeking today to make their next film project a visual success.

According to a January 2008 Detroit Free Press article, Detroit’s birth as a film destination isn’t just about commercial feature films. Producers of music videos, instructional DVDs, advertising, and television shows will work anywhere there’s a tax payoff. Which is why, not surprisingly, a number of movies set in Detroit, including Four Brothers and Assault on Precinct 13 were shot largely in Ontario. Employing a tax-break strategy has allowed Canada to enjoy success in the film industry; provinces are competing with one another to provide filmmakers the best deals. Now, various states have begun developing their own tax-break incentives and proposals.

To compete with those states and neighboring Canada, the state of Michigan adopted tax rebates of up to 20 percent to production companies that shoot movies, television shows and commercials in the state. However, those rebates have quickly been outdone by other states offering more lucrative incentives. In response, Michigan is creating more robust incentives, in addition to extra enticements for production companies that hire Michigan-based workers instead of flying a crew from outside the state.

Places like Detroit and other parts of Michigan know the long-term economic benefits that filming locally can bring to a location. For instance, couples who have enjoyed Somewhere in Time, starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve, are still drawn to Mackinac Island where the film was shot in 1979. And according to Free Press columnist Mitch Ablom and Michigan native and filmmaker Mike Binder, Michigan’s cities, countryside, beachfront, and changing seasons are just a few of the elements that can make Michigan a preferred site for the film industry, given bigger financial incentives and other assistance to people who make movies. Detroit City’s huge inventory of empty warehouse buildings could offer some exciting possibilities as sound stages.

In 2008, the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau launched Film Detroit in an effort to promote metro Detroit as a location for commercials, films, documentaries, and still photo shoots. Film Detroit is working hard to make Detroit a player in the film industry and help to diversify the state’s economy.

Summer 2008 brings together those involved in the art of film — from writer and director to cameraman and viewers — at the Detroit Windsor International Film Festival (DWIFF). The event, which runs June 26-29, 2008, reaches to all levels and corners of the filmmaking industry, and brings it into focus to support the growth of a strong film culture. More than film festival, the event wants to create a new type of film culture, which builds on 100 years of film and looks forward into the digital future.

Attendees will be able to view a collection of indie and featured films, attend workshops, product demonstrations, listen in on industry gurus, and meet Michiganders who have found success in the entertainment world. In addition, the event will also feature talents from the music industry and artists. Detroit and Windsor offer a one-of-a-kind experience in the world of film, art and entertainment. The DWIFF is the way to see how it all comes together.

Film goers will see cinema from both sides of the camera at venues all over Detroit city, including the campuses of Wayne State University, College for Creative Studies and the University of Windsor, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Majestic Theatre, and the Charles Wright African American Museum, to name a few.

Working with other film festivals and community events around Michigan and over the border, the DWIFF encourages collaboration with the entire community, bringing together people, companies, schools, neighborhoods and other creative organizations that are doing innovative things to promote the creative talent and production resources for which Detroit has long been known.

Undergoing the country’s largest urban redevelopment boom, Detroit serves as an exciting and unique destination for groups of all sizes. Redevelopment efforts encompass more than billion in new development under way. The international destination, located only one mile from Windsor, Canada, is also accessible by way of a 90-minute flight for 60 percent of the nation’s population.

Meeting attendees are welcomed at the Detroit Metro Airport, featuring a new two-million-square-foot terminal where international and domestic gates are located in one facility. Here, the brand new 404-room Westin Hotel, connected to the terminal, welcomes guests with superior amenities. In addition, the airport also offers numerous shops, restaurants and services, as well as 90 E-ticket kiosks and parking within walking distance of the new terminal. Northwest Airlines offers discounted airfare for conferences and conventions meeting in Detroit.

Improvements at Detroit Metro Airport have apparently made their impression: In a 2002 J.D. Power & Associates survey of more than 10,000 airline passengers from around the world, Metro Airport tied for second place among the U.S. airports and fourth place internationally.

When it comes to meeting space, metro Detroit is filled with large, state-of-the-art facilities that provide the perfect setting for conference needs. The region’s largest convention facility, Cobo Center is located in the heart of downtown Detroit. The full service, 2.4-million-square-foot convention center features five exhibit halls, 80 meeting rooms, and eight banquet rooms with spectacular river views. Or consider the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi which offers 320,000 square feet of exposition and banquet facilities. Other metro Detroit meeting venues include Ford Field, Joe Louis Arena, and the Palace of Auburn Hills. Metro Detroit also has the ideal meeting facility – from the traditional hotel to a unique venue at a local attraction. Detroit’s convention and meeting spaces are conveniently located near hotels, restaurants, and other entertainment venues.

And when it comes to entertainment, Detroit’s four casinos are located within five miles of each other. MGM Grand Casinos, MotorCity Casino, Greektown Casino and Casino Windsor all feature nonstop gaming action. Both MGM Grand and MotorCity Casino have recently opened luxury hotels with meeting space, with Greektown Casino and the Westin Book Cadillac to follow with luxury accommodations and meeting space in 2008. In all, the City of Detroit offers more than 35,000 competitively priced hotel rooms.

Detroit is also home to world-class attractions, entertainment and dining. The city was recently named by AmericanStyle readers as one of the top 25 arts destinations in the nation. Among the top 10 museums in the country, the Detroit Institute of Arts recently completed an exciting and ambitious renovation of its facility, resulting in exciting spaces to view the museum’s more than 100 galleries of art. The Detroit Theater District is the nation’s second largest in terms of seats and features most major musicals and theatrical performances.

Of course, Detroit is a sports town as well. It’s a city with passionate fans and exciting teams. From the Tigers at Comerica Park to the Red Wings to the Pistons at the Palace at Auburn Hills, the City of Detroit knows how to put on a good show. In addition to championship teams, the city also hosts championship events such as Super Bowl XL in 2006, the MLB All-Star Game in 2005, the 2004 Ryder Cup and the 2003 AAU Junior Olympic Games.

While your convention may be made up more of uncles and aunts rather than sales managers, smaller groups such as family reunions will discover many of the same amenities available to larger groups make Detroit an ideal choice for families. From luxury to economic, families appreciate the choices in accommodations, dining, entertainment available in Detroit. Family-friendly attractions range from the Detroit Zoo, Comerica Park, Ford Field, and The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village, to name a few. From music lovers to gear heads to African-American history, Detroit has something for everyone.
